How to make bacon at home

When you say ‘baon,’ you might think of the pork variety, but you can make bacon out of the belly meat of several different animals including lamb and beef. If you haven’t tried beef bacon, you’re missing out.

Making bacon at home is much easier than many people realize. Originally a method of preserving meat, the process of making bacon has remained unchanged for centuries. You can add your own flair to it, but the basic method is the same as it was hundreds of years ago.

All you need is salt and a bit of time!

How to Make Bacon At Home

First, you will need a certain type of salt known as curing salt. You’ll also need some fine sea salt and a bit of sugar. We recommend for each 1lb of meat:

  • 1 Tbsp. fine sea salt
  • 3/4 Tbsp. Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp curing salt

Lay the meat in a food-safe container and rub it all over by hand with your curing mix. Cover the container with cling film or wrap the meat in cling film and put the meat into the fridge to cure the bacon.

Each day for the next week you’ll need to flip the bacon. You can use this time to reapply any of the curing mixes that have fallen off. After 7 days, take the meat out of the clingfilm, rinse it off with cold water, and pat dry with a kitchen roll. Wrap the bacon in butcher paper and put it back into the fridge for 24 hours.

After 24 hours, you’ll have delicious homemade bacon! This is just a basic recipe so feel free to add in some flavourful spices to your curing mix. You can cook this bacon the same way you’d cook store-bought bacon or use a smoker to make smoked homemade bacon.
